MOVIE #3: The Prisoner of Azcaban
- Harry is at aunt n' uncle's house. He is very mistreated by his family. They all order him around and insult him vigorously. He is respectful and obeys their commands.
- The uncle's sister shows up. She is especially mean. She says she never would have taken him in that it'd have been straight to the orphanage for him. She insults Harry and he takes it until she starts on his parents. She calls his dad a "drunk." She calls it "bad blood". She believes that what Harry needs is some good old fashioned "discipline" (beatings). She says to her brother (Harry's uncle) that he can't be blamed for how Harry turned out because with dogs, "When there is something wrong with the bitch there is something wrong with the pups". At this Harry becomes enflamed. The lights begin to flicker in the house. His aunt and uncle look like, "oh no". The nasty lady begins to swell and swell until she's floating out the window and down the street.
- Harry packs up and leaves. He's on the street alone and the playground starts moving on its own. Lights flicker. A large black dog appears in the bushes. Just then a bus comes around the corner and stops for Harry. It is the bus for stranded witches or wizards. Harry boards and wants to go to the "Leaky Cauldron" in London.
- He sees "Sirius Black" in newspaper for first time. Sirius Black was a prisoner of Azcaban (wizard's jail) and was said to have been a murderer. Said to be supporter of Lord Voldemort.
- Harry enters "Leaky Cauldron". Is welcomed by one of the Ministers of Magic and informed that his Uncle's sister was found floating around a chimney and that she had been deflated and her memory properly "modified" so she would not remember the event. Harry was forgiven breaking that rule. He is warned about Sirius Black and told to avoid him.
- Weasley's show up. Ron's dad tells Harry that Harry is in danger because of Sirius Black's escape. Says that Sirius Black is believed to be faithful servant of Lord Voldemort and wants to find and kill Harry so that Voldemort can return.
- Harry, Ron and Hermione are on train to school. There is a sleeping man in their compartment. The man's name is on his suitcase, "Professor RJ Lupin".
- While on train the train stops on a bridge. Lights go out. Everything is creepy. Frost grows on all the glass and everyone's breath is showing. Something comes onto the train and comes to the kids' compartment. It focuses on Harry. His face gets "foggy" and looks as tho' it's being sucked into the face of the scary thing that is on the train. Just then the sleeping man rises and his wand lights up and the scary thing goes away.
- The kids are all in the room with the long tables and are being welcomed to school for the beginning of another school year. Draco is making fun of Harry for passing out on the train. As it turns out Professor Lupin is the new "Defense Against the Dark Arts" teacher.
- Reubus Hagrid is now no longer just the groundskeeper but is now a teacher in charge of the "Care of Magical Creatures".
- The creature on the train was a "Dementor". It was looking for Sirius Black. There are now Dementors stationed all around the school to protect the school from Sirius Black. The children are told the Dementors are dangerous. "It is not in the nature of a Dementor to be forgiving". But, Dumbledore encourages the children that, "Happiness can be found even in the darkest of times if one only remembers to turn on the light."
- There is a new very odd teacher for "Divination" class. She is teaching the kids to read tea leaves. She sees "the Grim" or the darkest omen in the world in Harry's cup. Ron doesn't notice when Hermione shows up at class.
- Next the kids are in Hagrid's class. He is introducing them to a creature called a Hippogriff named, "Buckbeak". The creature is as large as a horse and appears to be half horse and half eagle. Draco Malfoy is being a mean jerk. Hagrid asks who would like to be the first to approach Buckbeak. Everyone is scared so everyone takes a step back - except Harry. So, Harry has "volunteered" to approach Buckbeak. He follows all of Hagrid's instructions and bows to it. It responds by bowing back which means Harry is free to approach. He does so and then Hagrid plops Harry on its back and it takes off and they have a beautiful flight. When Harry returns, all smiles, Draco is angry. He pushes aside other kids and says, "He's not so scary", and rushes right up to Buckbeak who rears and scratches Draco. Draco crumbles crying. Later Draco is telling his friends that the school nurse told him he nearly lost his arm.
- Professor Lupin's class is studying "Boggarts". They are creatures which are shape-shifters. They choose a shape which is your greatest fear. They way to defeat a Boggart is the spell, "Riddikulus" which turns the Boggart into something "silly". For Harry, the Boggart takes on the form of a Dementor and immediately Professor Lupin steps in and makes it go away and then ends class.
- Professor Lupin explains to Harry that Dementors force people to relive their own worst fears and that is how the Dementors have power over people.
- One of the animated paintings has a "fat lady who sings" in it. She goes missing and her painting is all cut up. She is found in another painting and claims that Sirius Black is in the castle.
- Professor Lupin does not show up for a class. Professor Snape comes in and explains to the class that he is "incapable" of teaching class and that "today" they would be learning the difference between a werewolf and an animagus (which is someone who can willfully choose to change into an animal's form). Werewolves have no choice in their change and when they change they no longer remember who they are. Snape wants the kids to do an "in depth" paper on werewolves.
- Draco Malfoy flies a note across class to Harry of an animated stick person getting hurt playing Quidditch.
- Harry follows the snitch during Quidditch and goes up into the clouds too high. The Dementors are up there and find Harry and start to suck the life out of him. He falls off his broom. Dumbledore stands and breaks Harry's fall and saves his life with the spell, "Arresto Momento".
- Harry's broomstick falls into the Whomping Willow and is…whomped. Broken.
- Harry asks Professor Lupin to teach him how to fight the Dementors. Lupin explains that the Dementors feed on every good feeling and happy memory. Lupin agrees to help Harry. Lupin looks weak and needs rest.
- Draco (with two friends) is taunting Ron and Hermione on a school outing. Harry is not permitted on the outings because his aunt and uncle have not signed the permission form. He shows up anyway using his cloak of invisibility. As Draco is saying bad things about Hermione and Ron, Harry starts to throw snowballs at Draco. He then starts to pull down their pants and do other mischievous things to them and scares them away. He then reveals himself to Ron and Hermione.
- Harry continues (invisibly) to town with Ron and Hermione. Sees two teachers going in to talk to a shop owner. He sneaks in and overhears a conversation about who Sirius Black is. They say Sirius is the one who revealed Harry's parents location to Voldemort and that he basically is the one responsible for their deaths. Harry runs, cries, and vows to "get" Sirius Black.
- Lupin is explaining to Harry how to defeat the Dementors. One must remember and focus on and allow to be flooded with the best memory they can think of and then say "Expecto Patronum".
- They practice with a Boggart but Harry is unsuccessful. Lupin asks what his memory was and it was the 1st time he rode a broom. Lupin says that won't do. So, Harry remembers a time when his parents were talking and smiling at him. He was so little he says he doesn't know if it is a real memory or not but it's the best he's got. This time he is able to fend off the Boggart.
- Ron's rat, Scabbers, disappears.
- Harry is given a map by Ron's older brothers (the twins). The map will show you where anyone is in Hogwart's. Harry sees on the map the footsteps of "Peter Pettigrew". Peter was said to have been killed by Sirius Black the night Harry's parents were killed and that the only thing that was left of him was a finger. Harry attempts to find Peter but he sees only a rat scurry by. Then, Snape catches him…and then Lupin shows up and protects Harry. Wants to know how Harry got that map…and can't believe that Peter Pettigrew is still alive.
- Harry, Hermione and Ron are in the crazy Divination class and Hermione is offended by the teacher and knocks a crystal ball onto the floor which rolls out the door. After class, Harry sees the ball down the hall, picks it up and takes it back to the classroom. When he puts the ball down he sees Sirius' face in the ball. Then, the teacher shows up and "prophesies" over him and says that "he will return tonight"…When she is done she has no idea she's said anything.
- Hermione flips out on Draco who is being so mean. She threatens him with her wand and he cowers and snivels. She puts the wand down and then punches him in the nose. He runs away telling his friends, "Don't tell anyone about this!"
- Harry, Hermione and Ron go to Hagrid's and there Ron receives Scabbers who Hagrid found. The ministry of Destruction of Dangerous Animals has decided to put Buckbeak down because Draco's dad, Lucius, is so mad about what happened. They are on their way to give the "death penalty" to Buckbeak who is tied in the garden. A rock comes thru the window and breaks a pot. Another rock hits Harry. The kids leave by the back door as Dumbledore and the executioner arrive in the front. Scabbers bites Ron who is shocked. Scabbers runs and they chase him. Scabbers runs to the base of the Whomping Willow where Ron finally catches him. Then that black dog shows up and attacks what appears to be Ron and pulls him (and Scabbers) down under the Whomping Willow. Harry and Hermione have an adventure trying to follow.
- Harry and Hermione find Ron. The black dog was actually Sirius Black who is now in human form. Ron says, "he's an animagus!" Then, Professor Lupin shows up. He and Sirius embrace as old friends and talk of "finally being able to kill him." The audience and Harry and friends all believe the discussion is about Harry. Finally they explain that it is in fact Peter Pettigrew who they are eager to kill and that he is Scabbers. Scabbers attempts to run, he is zapped by their wands and turns human. He snivels and begs for his life. It turns out it was Peter who turned Harry's parents in to Voldemort. When Lupin and Sirius were ready to kill Peter, Harry says, "Wait." And, believes they should take him back to the castle and let "justice be served". (In other words, let the Dementors have him)
- While making their way back to the castle, the moon comes out. Now Lupin becomes a werewolf and this is not good. Peter turns back into a rat and scurries away. Sirius turns back into a dog to fight the werewolf but is not making out very well. The kids try to help. Then there is a "howl" off in the distance and the werewolf runs off.
- Sirius has been hurt…seriously…just had to say that…and is lying motionless by a creek. Harry goes to him to revive him. The Dementors come. They have been looking for Sirius. They find him and Harry and begin to suck the life outta' both of them. Harry attempts "Expecto Patronum" but is too weak. He then sees a glowing stag (deer) on the other side of the creek and a huge ball of light emits from it which drives the Dementors away. Harry believes it is his dad he's seen that his dad conjured the patronum to save him.
- Because of Sirius dragging Ron into the hole his leg is hurt and so he has to go to the infermitory.
- While Harry and Hermione are there with Ron Dumbledore shows up and says some things to Hermione that Harry finds confusing. Sirius has been taken to jail and is going to receive the Dementor's Kiss which is worse than death because they suck out your soul. Dumbledore says that they must do something. They assert, "But we're witnesses! We saw!" Dumbledore says that it doesn't matter because, "A child's voice no matter how honest and true is useless to those who have forgotten to listen." He says to Hermione that there is the possibility that if she is successful that many innocent lives will be spared tonight. Dumbledore says he believes that three turns should be sufficient. She knows what he means. She takes her "time turner" necklace out and turns it back three turns. She and Harry show up just as Hermione is punching Draco in the nose and they see themselves. Hermione explains that this was how she had been getting to all her classes all school year.
- They then retrace their steps (as Dumbledore had suggested to them) They show up outside Hagrid's house while they are inside. Hermione throws a rock into the house which breaks a pot. She throws a 2nd which hits Harry. They watch themselves exit. Then, they take Buckbeak out of the garden to safety.
- They wait in the woods for everyone to come out from beneath the Whomping Willow. Hermione howls which draws Lupin (werewolf) away from the group and toward Harry and Hermione. They run. Just as Lupin is about to pounce on them Buckbeak shows up and scares him off.
- Harry and Hermione look up and can see the Dementors flying in. They look and see Harry and Sirius on the other side of the creek. Harry is excited and waiting for his dad to appear. Finally, he springs to action and goes to the creekside and says, "Expecto Patronum!" A bright light glows and the Dementors leave. Harry realizes it was him. It hadn't been his dad after all.
- They fly back to Hogwart's on the back of Buckbeak. They get to Sirius and set him free and run back to where they started just in time. Dumbledore is still just walking out the door after having talked to them about doing this.
- Harry goes to see Lupin. He has resigned his position in the school and is leaving.
- Harry expresses sadness that they did all of that "for nothing" because in the end Peter Pettigrew got away. Lupin says that no! They uncovered the truth and that made a great deal of difference. He gives the map back to Harry.
- Harry receives a package in the mail. It's "the Firebolt". The latest and fastest flying broom.
Spells cast in the movie:
Lumos - turns on wand like a flashlight.
Nox - turns off light on wand
Riddikulus - turns what you fear into something funny. Used by the kids during class.
Arresto Momento - stopped Harry's fall from the sky.
I solemnly swear I am up to no good - causes the "Marauder's Map" to reveal itself.
Mischief Managed - causes the Marauder's Map to hide itself.
Expecto Patronum - is said while allowing your best memory to fill you and gives you protection against the Dementors who are trying to suck all your good memories out of you in order to kill you.
Expelliarmus - disarms someone (used 2 times)
Immobilius - makes something become immobile
Bombarda - opens a lock (used by Hermione when breaking Sirius out of jail)
