MOVIE #6: the Half-Blood Prince
Stuff that happens in the movie:
- Harry is being photographed, looks sad
- People are seeing weird stuff in the sky, a cloud skull, death eaters are in the
muggle world and grab someone and destroy a bridge.
- Harry is sitting at a diner with a newspaper (The Daily Prophet), the waitress is pretty and they “make a date” for when she gets off work. Harry looks up and sees Dumbledore across the street. Harry will have to miss the date. Takes Dumbledore’s arm and they “apparate”. Harry’s never done this before – Dumbledore says he did well most vomit the first time.
- Show up at Professor Horace Slughorn’s house. He’s hiding as a “chair”. They convince him to go to Hogwarts by using Harry as bait.
- Dumbledore drops Harry off at Ron’s house. His trunk and owl are already there. Ginny is excited to see him.
- Bellatrix and Narcissa Malfoy (mom of Draco/wife of Lucius) go together somewhere…Peter Pettigrew is there…go see Snape. Narcissa wants help for her son. Wants protection for Draco. Draco has been asked/ordered by the Dark Lord to kill Dumbledore. She knows that Voldemort will kill Draco if he does not do the task. Asks that if Draco fails will Snape do it. Snape makes an unbreakable vow. (Breaking one results in the vow-makers death.)
- George and Fred now have crazy store.
- Ollivander’s store owner is kidnapped and store wrecked. (the guy who sells the wands)
- Draco and his mom, Narcissa, acting suspicious and go into store and are looking at some “cabinet”.
- On the train to school Harry uses cloak of invisibility to snoop on Draco. Draco senses him. Waits till everyone is off train and uses “petrificus totalus” on Harry to knock him out. He kicks him in the face. Leaves him there.
- Luna Lovegood comes in and has goofy glasses on and finds Harry. She uses a spell that “completes” the spell so Harry will unfreeze.
- In the cafeteria for the introduction day at school. Professor Horace Slughorn is introduced as the new potions instructor and the new Defense Against the Dark Arts instructor is now Severus Snape.
- Dumbledore tells everyone to beware of Voldemort now. Tells everyone of Tom Riddell and that the “Dark forces greatest weapon is you”.
- Harry and Ron show up to Slughorn’s class late. Must get books from cupboard. Harry gets old beat up one with lots of notes. Book says that it is the property of the “Half-Blood Prince”.
- During class the students are asked to open their books and make up a brew of “instant death” and whoever makes it correctly wins a little vial of “liquid luck”. Harry, using the notes from the book he has, wins.
- Harry goes to see Dumbledore. Dumbledore is curious about a memory of Slughorn’s. He shows Harry a case of memories. Shows Harry the day Dumbledore met Tom Riddell at the orphanage where he lived. He wanted to bring Tom to Hogwarts. Tom wanted to know Dumbledore was for real and he did some magic which also revealed a stash of stolen things Tom had in his wardrobe. Dumbledore told Tom there was no stealing allowed at Hogwarts.
- Harry asks, “Did you know then?” Dumbledore says he had no idea. He wants Harry to get to know Slughorn.
- Deatheaters trying to get into Hogwarts. There is a spell of protection over it.
- Draco finds a cabinet in the Room of Requirement
- Quidditch tryouts. Ron wants to be a keeper. Someone else does, too. Hermione uses a “confundus” spell to help Ron out.
- Harry is reading the potions book a lot.
- Out in town…in village at “the Three Broomsticks” pub. Slughorn there. Harry talks to him. Slughorn invites him to a dinner at his home.
- Walking back to Hogwarts a girl is tossed about in the air. She’d been cursed and given a necklace to deliver to Dumbledore. She’d touched it and it was hurting her.
- Ron and Harry talk about normal teenage guys stuff about girls.
- Special dinner with other students at Slughorn’s. One male guest likes Hemione. Ginny and Harry seem to like each other. Harry stays last when others leave. Harry talks about Tom Riddell.
- Ron, Hermione and Harry in cafeteria before 1st Quidditich match. Harry tricks Ron into thinking he’d added “liquid luck” to his cup and Ron then goes out and does spectacularly in the match. (Liquid luck is called “Felix Felices”)
- Afterparty after Quidditch match. Girl who has been interested in Ron kisses him. They spend much of rest of movie “snogging”. Hermione is super sad.
- Harry takes Luna to Slughorn’s Christmas party. Hermione takes the annoying guy who likes her who happens to be Ron’s rival. (Cormac McClaggan)
- Snape has messge from Dumbledore for Harry simply wishing him a good holiday. Says Dumbledore’s away.
- Draco crashes party. Snape escorts him out. Harry snoops. Hears Draco confessing to the incident with the necklace. He says, “I was chosen for this! This is my moment”. Snape reminds him he’s taken an unbreakable vow to protect Draco.
- Harry tells Lupin about this. Lupin says, “I trust Dumbledore. If he trusts Snape so do I.”
- Someone outside Ron’s house. Deatheaters have shown up. Bellatrix is taunting, “I killed Sirius Black! I killed Sirius Black!” Harry chases. Ginny goes after Harry. Lupin, his wife and Ron’s dad also pursue. A werewolf/deatheater named Grayback is there also. Then the Weasley’s house is set on fire and destroyed.
- Harry sees more of Voldemort’s memories with Dumbledore’s memory viewer thing. Tom Riddell is now older. Sees Tom questioning Slughorn about a “rare magic”. Slughorn gets offended and angry and says to never bring up such a thing again. Dumbledore says that he believes the memory is a lie. He believes it has been tampered with. He wants Harry to find out what Slughorn is hiding. Believes that without that memory they are “blind”.
- Harry approaches Slughorn and totally blows it. Uses the dialogue that Tom Riddell had used almost word-for-word and tips Slughorn off, “Dumbledore put you up to this, didn’t he!” And, now Slughorn avoids Harry like the plague.
- Ron cannot resist eating a box of chocolates some girl has left for Harry. They had a love potion in them. Ron is silly in love with this girl he’s never met. Harry takes him to Slughorn asking for a remedy. Afterward, they decide to drink a glass of wine. Ron drinks first and falls to the floor foaming at the mouth. Harry thinks of what to remedy that and saves Ron. Wine had been poisoned.
- Ron’s girlfriend shows up at the infirmary. Hermione is there at Ron’s side. Ron’s asleep but is calling Hermione’s name. Girlfriend insulted and runs off. Hermione is pleased.
- Harry follows Draco to see what he’s doing. Draco sends a bird thru the cabinet but it dies.
- In cafeteria. Ron does not remember calling for Hermione. Doesn’t know why his girlfriend hates him now but doesn’t mind. Katie (the girl who’d gotten cursed with the necklace) shows up well finally. Draco gets up and leaves and ends up in the boy’s bathroom crying. Harry follows him and they fight. Harry does a spell he doesn’t know what it does (that he found in the book belonging to the Half-Blood Prince) and it puts Draco on the floor writhing in pain with blood/cuts appearing all over him. Snape comes in and heals Draco.
- All the friends agree Harry has to get rid of that book. He takes it to the Room of Requirement with Ginny. She hides it. Then she kisses Harry.
- Still no luck with Slughorn. Realizes he has “liquid luck”. Drinks the potion. His personality becomes more outspoken and decides he’s going to Hagrid’s. On the way there he finds Slughorn in the greenhouse taking some rare leaves. Says he’s going to Hagrid’s. Slughorn is worried because it’s almost dark so he goes with him. There, Hagrid is sad about his friend who has died…it’s Aragog the giant spider.
- They do a “funeral” for Aragog.
- They go into Hagrid’s and the 2 men drink and talk about Aragog. Hagrid passes out. Slughorn is full of strong drink and Harry is full of liquid luck.
- Slughorn says a student once gave him a fish. His only pet he ever had. It was a flower petal in water. The petal sank and turned into a fish. It was from Harry’s mom. The bowl was empty the day that Harry’s mom, Lily, then died. He explains that Harry survived that night because of Lily’s love which was more powerful than Voldemort. Harry is the Chosen One. Harry gets bold and asks about the memory that Slughorn has altered. Says to not dishonor the memory of his mom. Says to be “brave like Lily or he will disgrace her and the bowl will be forever empty for everyone.” At this, Slughorn gives Harry the memory and asks Harry not to think less of him.
- Harry takes it to the memory viewer. Sees the scene again. This time the teacher does not get offended. He answers the question of Tom Riddell. He is asking about “Horcruxes”. Slughorn explains to him that it is when you split your soul…take a piece of it and hide it in an object. Says it is a very dark magic. Says it is to protect you if attacked. Tom asks if it is possible to split it into 7? Teacher is horrified at this suggestion because to split your soul you must murder someone. Teacher says that it goes against nature to kill people.
- Dumbledore now realizes what’s going on. Voldemort has hidden pieces of his soul in 7 horcruxes. This is how he came back to life when he’d been gone for years. Dumbledore’s face tells us that Harry is a horcrux.
- Snape and Dumbledore talk.
- Dumbledore takes Harry somewhere. Says that “you must obey every command I give you without question.”
- They “apparate” and go somewhere by the ocean. Go in a cave. Find a bowl with a necklace in the bottom. Someone must drink the liquid to get the necklace out. Dumbledore says he will drink it and that Harry must make him no matter how much he begs to stop. Harry does this. Dumbledore does beg to stop. Harry persists. They get the necklace.
- Dumbledore is thirsty. Harry goes to get water out of the lake in the cave they are in. Dead things attack. Dumbledore saves them.
- Draco awakens. Storm is brewing. Snape is being creepy. Draco opens the cabinet. Deatheaters come thru. Bellatrix is among them.
- Dumbledore and Harry return. Harry is told to go find Snape and to under no circumstance come out of hiding.
- Harry sees from below. Sees Draco enter room with Dumbledore. Dumbledore says, “You are no assesin”. Draco does “expelliarmus” on Dumbledore. Loses his wand. “How are the others here?” he asks about the deatheaters. Draco explains he’s been fixing the cabinet. The cabinet at Hogwarts and the one in the village are “sisters” and allow passage but they were broken.
- Draco says, “I have to kill you or he’s going to kill me”. Draco is crying.
- Harry has his wand aimed. Snape appears. “Shushes” Harry. Snape goes up. Dumbledore looks at him and says, “Please”. Then Snape says, “Avada cadavara” and Dumbledore dies.
- The deatheaters run loose in Hogwarts destroying things. Burn Hagrid’s house.
- Harry yells at Snape, “He trusted you!”
- Harry learns that Snape is the “Half-Blood Prince” and that it was his book.
- Skull cloud appears over Hogwarts.
- Harry goes to Dumbledore. Cries. Whole school is there watching. Ginny comforts Harry.
- McGonagall raises her wand. Everyone does.
- Hall is empty.
- McGonagall offers her friendship to Harry.
- Hermione asks, “Do you think Draco would’ve done it?” Harry says, “No.”
- They open the necklace and find a note. This necklace is actually not a horcrux. Hermione says there is no way that Harry is going looking for them without them.
- Fawkes flies by.
