MOVIE #4: The Goblet of Fire

Stuff that happens in the movie:

- Harry is dreaming: Snake slithering into graveyard. Caretaker (old man) hears voices and goes into house and up stairs. Overhears 3 men speaking. A person we can’t see well appears to have a shriveled hand. It’s Voldemort. The two men are Barty Crouch Jr and Peter Pettigrew (who is called Wormtongue). You hear them talking about needing Harry. Snake slithers into room and says the filthy muggle caretaker is there. Voldemort tells them to “give him a proper greeting” and he’s killed. Harry awakens.

- Harry is with Ron’s family and Hermione is there. They head out in the morning and meet up with Cedric Diggory and his father. They go hiking. There is a boot on top of a hill. It is said to be a “portkey”. They all touch it and fly round and round, let go, and then land at the Quidditch World Cup.

- They enter a tiny tent…and inside it is cavernous! Huge! Harry looks around amazed and says, “I love magic.”

- Draco Malfoy and Lucius are there and begin to taunt and insult the Weasleys and Harry. Lucius says looking ominously at Harry, “Do enjoy yourselves - while you still can.”

- The tournament is amazing.

- During the evening there is an attack. Hooded figures with skeletal masks march thru the campground and are burning everything. Ron’s dad tells everyone to run. There is chaos. Harry gets knocked out. He awakens and everything is in ashes. He sees a man he doesn’t recognize thru the rubble and sees the man cast the spell, “Mosmorde” toward the sky. This creates a skull and a snake in the sky.

- Kids are on the train to school. Harry’s scar is hurting. Hermione tells him he needs to tell Sirius Black about that and about the dream.

- A carriage being drawn by flying horses arrives at Hogwarts. Also a ship appears in the bay from under the water.

- In the “great hall” (like the cafeteria) Dumbledore announces that Hogwarts will be hosting the “Triwizard Tournament”. This is why the others have arrived. This tournament is a big big deal.

- “Mad-Eye Moody” is a new teacher this year. He’s a “Dark Wizard Catcher”. He’s believed to be totally mad. He’s always drinking something from a little vial thru the movie.

- Large goblet with blue flames is revealed. It chooses the participants. Any student who wishes to be in the tournament must write their name on a piece of paper and throw it into the goblet. It is a rule that no student under 17 may enter because of the danger level of the tournament. Some people have died in it. Dumbledore advises not to put your name in lightly because once the goblet chooses it is a legally binding magic contract.

- We see a guy sneaking into the goblet room at night.

- Mad-Eye Moody’s class is discussing the three unforgiveable curses. The students look disturbed. He takes out a whiptail scorpion (which is a harmless spider-like creature) and tells it “ingorgio”…it becomes larger. The three curses are: Imperio, Crucio, Avada Cadavara.

Imperio: you lose your ability to control yourself and you are under the control of another.
Crucio: excruciating pain
Avada Cadavara: death.

- Mad-Eye points out that there is only one person in the world who has ever survived the “avada cadavara” curse: Harry.

- Neville is upset by the demonstration. Mad-Eye takes him for tea.

- Diggory puts name in goblet.

- Ron’s twin older bro’s, Fred and George, make a fuss about being underage but wanting to put their names into the goblet. They take an “aging potion” to try to trick goblet. There is a line around the goblet noone under 17 can cross. They drink the potion and cross the line. They put their names in the goblet. Cheer. And, then the goblet spits their names back out.

- The ceremony to choose the names. Cup spits out the papers it has chosen. There are to be only three. After the three are chosen, Snape sees the goblet has begun to flame red and it spits out yet one more paper: Harry Potter.

- Harry didn’t put his name into the goblet. He is afraid.

- Dumbledore interrogates Harry. There are arguments between the teachers. One says that only a very advanced wizard could put a “confundus” charm on that goblet. They all agree that Harry could not have done it. The Goblet of Fire constitutes a binding magical contract. Harry must compete.

- Ron is mad at Harry. Mistrusts him. The whole school turns on Harry and makes fun of him.

- Sirius Black sends message to Harry to meet him in the common room that night. He speaks to him through the fire in the fireplace. Harry tells him about the dream. Sirius says this can’t all be coincidence.

- Ron gets message to Harry to go see Hagrid. Hagrid takes Harry into the woods where they see the arrival of 4 dragons. These will be the first challenge.

- Hagrid has gel in his hair and has combed his hair…and is wearing a flower. He’s got a thing for the leader of the girls’ school which is visiting. Her name is Olymp. She’s a giant.

- Harry sees Cedric and tells him about the dragons. Cedric apologizes for how everyone is treating Harry.

- Draco begins to taunt and insult Harry sharply. Harry has no patience for him and insults him back harshly. Draco gets very mad and pulls out his wand to attack Harry and Mad-Eye Moody intervenes and turns Draco into a ferret. It is most amusing. He taunts the ferret moving it up and down and up and down. Professor Magonagal shows up and asks if that is a student and scolds Mad-Eye for disciplining Draco that way. This scene is very funny.

- Harry goes with Mad-Eye to his room. A trunk in his room is moving around. He says Harry wouldn’t believe what is in there.

- Event #1 of the tournament. Harry goes 4th. Hermione comes to tell Harry “good luck”. Each dragon has a golden egg which holds a crucial clue to the next event and the person wouldn’t be able to proceed without it. Each contestant has to get the egg from their dragon. Harry’s dragon is the most brutal. He wins. Uses “accio” spell to call his broomstick to him to aid him.

- Ron apologizes after event saying only a crazy person would put their name in the goblet.

- Ron receives mail. Thinks it is a dress. It is men’s dress robes. Announcement is made that there will be “The Yule Ball” which is in honor of the tournament. The children will all enjoy some “well mannered frivolity”.

- McGonagall gives dance lesson to class with demo with Ron.

- Neville practices alone.

- Harry and Ron looking for dates to dance. Harry says fighting dragons is easier than asking a girl out.

- Hagrid and Olymp are sweet together.

- Much fussing over getting dates.

- Ron is distressed about his robes.

- The 4 contestants must dance together first.

- Cho (whom Harry likes) is the date of Diggory.

- Hermione is date of other school’s champion, “Krum”. Ron is jealous and makes Hermione cry.

- Harry has another dream about the graveyard, house, sees a tattoo, and hears, “Harry (is here) at last”…

- One day till next event and still doesn’t have egg figured out. When opening the egg it just screeches a horrid sound. Cedric Diggory returns the favor of the tip on the dragons and tells Harry to go take a bath on the 3rd floor and take his egg. Harry does this. Moaning Myrtle shows up. She tells Harry that the other boy put it in the water. Harry opens it under the water and it sings the clue. He finds out he must be under water for 1 hour. Now to figure out how. Neville tells him of a plant, “Gillyweed”, which will do that.

- Event #2: Something is stolen from each contestant and is at the bottom of the lake. They have 1 hour to retrieve it. There are “things” in the water however. One contestant is caught and out of the competition.

- Harry eats the gillyweed just before jumping into the water and sprouts gills and “webbed” feet and hands.

- Harry arrives at destination 1st. The 4 things are 4 people that the contestants cared about the most. Ron is there for Harry. Harry tries to take the person who was stolen for the 4th contestant who has been taken out of the competition. The mermaids protest. There is struggle. Meanwhile Diggory and Krum come and retrieve their people. Harry gets Ron and the 4th person. Before reaching the surface these weird creatures attack Harry. His hour is up. His gills disappear. He pushes the two people to the surface as he struggles below with the things. He finally pulls out his wand and says, “Ascendio” which you can guess causes him to ascend out of the water.

- Harry finishes last because he chose to wait and take the 4th person (and save their life) and so is awarded 2nd place for “outstanding moral tiger”.

- The Minister of something…notices that Mad-Eye Moody is doing something odd with his tongue and appears dead in the next scene.

- Harry goes to Dumbledore’s office. They are having a meeting. Dumbledore and the others leave Harry alone. He is attracted to the thing (that looks like a birdbath/goblet thing) that holds Dumbledore’s memories. Harry looks into it and gets “sucked in”. He sees a memory of the Minister of something overseeing a “trial” of an inmate of Azcaban (who happens to be an ex-death eater…who also happens to be the current leader of Krum’s school named Igor Karkaroff). He gives the name of another conspirator; the Minister of something’s own son, Barty Crouch Jr.! (And we see that he has a weird thing he does with his tongue)

- Harry tells Dumbledore about the dream he’s been having. Dumbledore does not give him good advice at this point (in my opinion) and tells him to forget it.

- Harry catches Igor and Snape talking in the potion room. Snape says someone has been stealing polyjuice ingredients and he “knows it is Harry and his friends”. (Polyjuice is used to take on the form of another person to use as a disguise)

- Event #3 is a maze. There is a cup they are to find. The 1st person to touch the cup is the winner. Send up red sparks if you want to forefeit. Dumbledore advises the contestants that in the maze people “change” and tells the kids to “be careful not to lose themselves.”

- Krum attacks the female contestant. Then the roots of the bushes grab her. Harry sees. He sends the red sparks into the air for her.

- Harry stops Diggory from attacking Krum, “No! He’s bewitched!”

- Harry and Cedric Diggory see the cup. Both run. Diggory is tripp

and snared by roots. He cries out to Harry to help. Harry goes back and uses the “reducto” spell to make the roots go away.

- Cedric says, “I was afraid you were going to leave me.”
Harry responds, “I was afraid I was, too.”
“Some game” the boys agree.

- They reach the cup and agree to touch it at the same time; a tie.

- The cup was a “port key”. They are taken to the graveyard Harry has been seeing in his dreams when they touch it.

- While they are looking around Peter Pettigrew (Wormtongue) shows up carrying a hideous baby-sized creature. It is Voldemort. Harry tells Cedric to get back to the cup…it is a port key…get back to the cup…

- When Harry gets attacked Diggory sticks up for him and immediately Voldemort orders Pettigrew to kill him which he does immediately with the avada cadavara curse and Cedric drops over dead.

- Pettigrew cooks up a brew, tosses in his own hand, a bone, the grotesque baby-thing of Voldemort, then adds some of Harry’s blood and it boils and out comes a new grown-up but hideous Voldemort.

- Voldemort summons all of the death eaters by pressing his wand into a snake tattoo on Pettigrew’s arm. Among them is the father of the meanest kid in school, Lucius. Lucius openly professes his unswerving allegiance to Voldemort.

- Voldemort explains to Harry that when his mother, Lily, gave her life for her only son that there was “old magic” involved…that he had not forseen…which then prevented him from hurting Harry. Her sacrifice gave Harry protection because of this “old magic”.

- Harry tries “expelliarmus” on Voldemort but it doesn’t work.

- Harry runs.

- Harry comes back. He does “expelliarmus” while Voldemort does, “avada cadavara” and the two wands “connect”. An orb of light is created. Cedric, the recently killed caretaker, and Harry’s parents all appear. Cedric tells Harry to take his body back to his dad. His parents tell him to go for the port key.

- Harry escapes and takes Cedric with him.

- Cedric’s dad is so so so sad…and Harry is totally devastated. Mad-Eye takes Harry off saying he’s helping him.

- Mad-Eye gets Harry alone. Acts weird. Asks what it was like to be in the dark Lord’s presence…

- When it’s getting tense Snape, McGonagall and Dumbledore burst in. Give Mad-Eye the truth serum and he admits that the real Mad-Eye is in that trunk. Without his polyjuice the fake Mad-Eye returns to his true form; Barty Crouch Jr.

- Dumbledore does memorial for Cedric Diggory. Says that the Ministry of Magic does not want him to tell the kids the truth but that the truth is that Voldemort killed him and that he’s back. He says that in light of recent events that “the bonds of friendship are even more important than ever…if we remember that then Cedric Diggory will not have died in vain…”

- Dumbledore comes to Harry’s room. Says that soon will come a time when we must choose between what is right and what is easy.
